William the Silent

Grade 3s and 4s began their day with a spelling and arithmetic test. Just the spelling tests are coming home today.
We had a history lesson today where we learned about a revolt in The Netherlands against King Philip of Spain. The children heard how William the Silent stood up to Philip and eventually helped The Netherlands become independent. Ask your child what they remember about today's lesson. We also completed map work. The children have been challenged to find a picture of Queen Beatrix who rules Holland today and is the great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, granddaughter of William the Silent.
In poetry, the children selected a poem they had written to share with the class. The class responded with what they understood the message of the poem to be and reflected on how a student performed their poem.
We ended our day with math. Grade 3s learned that an angle is formed when two sides meet at a vertex. They learned about a very special kind of angle called a right angle, that looks like an angle in a square. The practiced creating figures where there are 1, 2 and 3-right angles. Ask your child which figure could not be formed. Grade 4s used the attributes of quadrilaterals to sort figures. They learned that a square can be called a trapezoid because it has at least 1 pair of parallel lines but a trapezoid is not a square. The children are bringing home a sheet that will help them complete their MMS 4 homework. They are learning to be good communicators in geometry by using the appropriate terms.
Ms. Chin's class has challenged our class to a multiplication championship. This will happen a week from now. The children are urged to memorize multiplication facts up to 7 x 7.
We ended our day with children sharing what they have learned about Barack Obama. Their next challenge is to find facts about Mitt Romney.
Monday is Guy Fawkes Day. Children will be rewarded 100 000 house points if they recite the Remember, Remember Poem (but leave out the gory bits).
The children also attended gym class today.
